Toss that tub, baby - this is the reason plain potato chips exist. Make Homemade French Onion Dip from scratch for a more sophisticated snack session. Caramelized onions bring a bold, deep flavor that takes this classic chip dip from sleepy to dreamy.

3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 large vidalia (sweet) onions 1 large red onion 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon kosher salt ¼ cup white wine, broth, or water 1 c sour cream 4 oz cream cheese, at room temperature ½ c mayonnaise ¾ teaspoon garlic powder ½ teaspoon onion powder ½ teaspoon ground pepper 2 tablespoon dried chives potato chips and sliced vegetables, for serving

caramelize the onions


Cook the onions over medium heat - low and slow is the ticket! Add water, white wine, or broth, 1-2 teaspoons at a time, if the pan gets too dry.

at 15 minutes

The onions will soften and release their liquids.

at 30 minutes

The liquids have cooked off and the onions are light golden brown.

at 45 minutes

The onions are a deep, caramel brown. They're perfect! Deglaze with the remaining wine, broth or water and cook until completely absorbed.

Whisk sour cream, cream cheese, mayonnaise, onion powder, garlic powder, pepper, and chives until smooth



Fold in the caramelized onions.

chill & serve


Chill at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld, and up to overnight. Garnish with chopped chives and serve with chips, pretzels, and sliced vegetables.
